Municipio: Catemaco, Veracruz
Location: edge of Laguna Sontecomapan
Type: spring
Fees: free
The poza (spring) is a small fresh water fed swimming hole surrounded by mature
vegetation bordering Laguna Sontecomapan just north of the village of
Sontecomapan, and easily walked to from the embarcadero.
The name translates to "Spring of the Dwarfs", which sounds mystical, until the origin
of the name is heard. The poza is very shallow and absolutely clear but the water´s
reflexivity shortens the legs of bathers, visually turning them turning them into dwarfs.
There is a restaurant right above the water and it is a nice place to watch the kids
dive off trees or swing in the branches. Unfortunately it also has a very loud juke box.
If you have to eat there, try the caldo de robalo, (snook fish soup, excellent).
My partner told me this formerly very popular spring, 40 years ago, was twice as big.
I reminded her that she is now at least twice the size she was then.
