Los Tuxtlas have been inhabited for more than 7,000 years and possibly originated the first civilization in
Mesoamerica. Numerous archaeological sites have been and are being discovered.

The INAH, Mexico´s Institute for Anthropology and History, keeps records of archaeological finds in
Mexico, and is totally overwhelmed.  Of the many sites registered for Veracruz alone, only  about 2000
have been catalogued.

It´s financially simply not feasible to do much more than that agency is doing. So save your complaints
when you see an Olmec monument as a door stop.

Los Tuxtlas are fortunate to have several museums in this small region. Of course they are not as
magnificent as the museums in Mexico City or Xalapa, but they are worth a visit because they show the
love that local people have for their history.

Unfortunately most of the museum quality pieces found in the Tuxtlas have found homes outside the area.
