Its population was 27,485 as of the 2000 census.
66% speak an indigenous language, mostly
Popoluca which is alleged to date back to the
Olmecs.
Economically, the county depends on small scale
agriculture, some cattle ranching and illegal
logging and bird collecting. Statistically the
municipio ranks as one of the poorest in Mexico.
Soteapan was the scene of a major battle in the
late 1400's when the southern Maya related
tribes defeated the encroaching Aztecs at
Cuilonia. After the Spanish conquest of the area,
the first mention of Soteapan occurs as a
province of the major gulf coast city of
Coatzacoalcos.
In 1836 San Pedro Soteapan became a municipio.
Touristically the area offers visitors several
waterfalls, small lakes, mountain streams and
access to the highland forests of the Los Tuxtlas
Biosphere. A small hotel and a guest house are
available in San Pedro Soteapan.

The Municipio of Soteapan is a municipality (city/county combination) in southern
Veracruz, Mexico, hugging the slopes of the Santa Marta Volcano, within the
Sierra de Santa Marta which is a component of the volcanic mountain range Sierra
de Los Tuxtlas.
