The El Bastonal is a sparsely populated, heavily deforested area above Miguel Hidalgo. It was
expropriated by the Mexican government in the late 1990´s to form part of the nucleus of the Los
Tuxtlas biosphere.
From here a road used to lead through the heart of the Sierra Santa Marta past Las Minas (an
abandoned mine) to the pueblo of Santa Martha, above Soteapan.
Road maintenance has been abandoned to inhibit entrance into the area from Santa Martha, and
the original road from Tebanca, which was recommended for bird watching by a major book is
now only suitable to heavy duty jeeps..
This is the Bastonal turnoff just after Tebanca.
It´s impassable except to high clearance 4x4´s.
Use the crossover from Miguel Hidalgo, instead.
