Tres Zapotes' treasures!
.
It was in 1862 while visiting the region of San
Andres Tuxtla, a town of the state of
Veracruz, in Mexico; and during some
excursions I made, that I heard of a colossal
head which had been disinterred a few years
before ...

Melgar 1862 - good read!
Zapotes are a brown fruit
resembling an oversized
avocado. Unlike avocadoes their
pulp is very sweet. Have 3!
antique abuse
hands on museum
Stela C
contains the oldest or maybe second oldest
written  date of the Americas,
found in Tres Zapotes
but housed in Mexico City

How to get there:

From Santiago Tuxla, south of bridge, take road west  to Isla, then app.
8 km later, at a badly marked intersection, turn north onto potholed  road
to Tres Zapotes (March '05). About 48 km from Catemaco.

Nice waterfall on south side just before turnoff
