Geography of Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico
Watersheds
The Sierra de Los Tuxtlas separates two major watersheds reaching into the Sierra Madre in south central
Mexico. The cuenca of Rio Papaloapan occupies most of the north west Sierra. Rio Coatzacoalcos
concentrates mostly on the Sierra Santa Marta.
The higher elevations of Los Tuxtlas create the divide of these cuencas from the Gulf of Mexico. This
coastal area is divided into 14 additional sub cuencas formed by the rivers having formed valleys in the
sides of the volcanic mountains. Laguna del Ostion forms the last coastal cuenca before Rio
Coatzacoalcos.
Laguna Catemaco forms an additional sub-cuenca.
