I was tempted to use the term mountain villages. But having lived near the Alps, the Rocky Mountains and
the Himalayas, Catemaco higher elevated villages were just  too low an image to consider.

Catemaco sits at 1,115 feet (340 meters) above sea level. The tallest mountain is either Volcano Santa
Marta or San Martin, just short of 5,800 feet. Many different sources differ on their actual heights!

Most large communities are below 1,500 feet and only a few places reach above 3000.

The higher elevated villages in Los Tuxtlas are generally
ejidos composed of recent mestizo migrants from
the local area or other parts of Mexico. Only a few indigenous hamlets survive.
