The Municipio (municipality) of Lerdo de Tejada is a city/county combination located in east central
Veracruz, Mexico, stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Papaloapan flood plains. The county of app.
22,000 inhabitants within 149 km2 abut Mexico Highway 180, about 60 miles south of Veracruz City and
40 miles north of Catemaco.
Formerly named Naranjal, the area has pre-hispanic roots, and is also possibly the site of the first
European commercial business in the continental Americas. Cortes founded the first sugarcane plantation
here and its attendant sugar mill is today the municipio's largest employer, and primary polluter.
To the tourist, the city offers several small hotels and restaurants. The Gulf beaches are undeveloped
and barely accessible.
