The Papalapa destruction
2 years ago, we woke up one morning to the hum of a dozen highlanders wittling and shaping palm
fronds into a palapa on one of the few stretches of laguna shore in the city not encumbered by
commercial encroachment.
That was not welcome, and rumors started circulating of having it burned down. The then Catemaco
president was cornered, because the structure had a grandfather permit from a previous president
who happens to be now the current president. Oh yes, Catemaco politics are interesting.
But the president had some rare fortitude and began legal proceedings against the palapa, which is also
unusal because commonly a presidente orders and the population jumps.
So two years later a crew shows up and faster than you can say a man from papaloapan with a
papalapan wife lived in a palapa, the structure disappeared and restored the shore to its gorgeous
view and garbage strewn environment.
That part of the shore is scheduled for an extention of the malecon.
