Events in Los Tuxtlas & Catemaco

Catemaco Expoferia July 2005
Ignoring all naysayers and demolishers of pueblo
property, the Catemaco expoferia turned into a
wonderful event.

I happened to pass by mostly in the before days
and during the on days I showed up primarily during
the off hours. So I have no photos to document this
success.

The tuxtlasweb.com website has oodles of event
photos.

Catemaco´s most important holiday is the birthday of
La Señora del Carmen, Catemaco´s catholic patron
saint. Literally thousands of worshippers arrive
here in busloads to pray to her holiness in the
basilica and then proceed to trash the pueblo.

Historically, the Catemaco government permitted to
destroy the city center for up to 2 weeks
to accomodate amusement rides and hundreds of
stalls serving anything from roast pig to chinese
electronics.

Without discussion, the current Catemaco
presidente chose to rid the city center of the event
and move it to the outskirts.

There literally were street fights and violent
demonstrations  to protest that decision.

The fair was a visual success but financially it left
the city government more broke than usual.
