Archaeological digs suggest earlier fortification, and include a ball court, some earth mounds, and
residential remnants. (1000 AD - 1500AD)
Most treasure has been looted from the island, including some copperarticles
The early Spanish settlers contemplated erecting a defensive fort on the island.
Their successors apparently grazed cattle on the island.
A few years ago, the Universidad de Veracruz took it over and stocked it with howler monkeys.
