Aside from fish, snails, eels and leeches the laguna is well populated by various other species.
Morelettis´s crocodiles nest around Nanciyaga and in the swampy area between Tebanca and Las
Margaritas. Fresh water otters also maintain a shrinking population base. Turtles have almost
disappeared into the cooking pots of the shore inhabitants

Commercial fishery is hyperactive on the lake with annual catches close to 2000 tons.

The most common catches are
mojarra tilapia, a perch like fish in the cichlid family introduced from
Africa in the 1970´s and outbreeding the endemic
mojarra negras, blancas & others;  topotes,
aquarium type mollies; and
tegogolos, fresh water snails.

Several of the laguna's small fish are internationally renowned to aquarium hobbyists.
