Municipios of Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz,  Mexico

Hueyapan de Ocampo, Veracruz 95860
Hueyapan de Ocampo is a municipio in southwest Veracruz state, bordering
Catemaco, amid western foothills of the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas.

As of the early 19th century, the area belonged to Acayucan, and formed its
own municipio in 1923. Its name arose from the nahuatl language meaning "
en el
agua grande
” (on the big water). The suffix of "de Ocampo" refers to Melchor
Ocampo, a major contributor to the Mexican presidency of Benito Juarez.

The municipio had 39795 inhabitants in 2000. The county seat (cabecera) is also
named Hueyapan and had 3436 inhabitants. Other major towns are Juan Diaz
Covarrubias (7825), Los Mangos (3001), and Cuatotolapan (2336). The county
population contains 19% indigenous language speakers, primarily  Popolucas.

Economically the area focuses on agriculture and livestock raising. A sugarcane
mill is located in Covarrubias.

Touristically, the town of Covarrubias offers some budget restaurants and a
few motels.  Significant archaeological finds have been unearthed in the area
and some mostly Olmec pieces are displayed in the community museum of the
Popoluca village of Santa Rosa Loma Larga.

Geographically, numerous small rivers, including El Amayo, El Coyolito and El
Cuitlazóyotl arising from the volcanic hinterland criss cross the area to flow into
Rio Hueyapan. Although part of Los Tuxtlas, none of its area lies within the Los
Tuxtlas Biosphere. This largest county in Los Tuxtlas in essence is the doormat
to the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas.

Main access is Highway 180 from Catemaco to Acayucan.
