The gulf of Mexico used to be one of the most productive habitats in the world. The operational world is
"USED TO BE". Overfishing has killed a lot of that resource resource both in Mexico and the USA.
Sportfishing is still available from Veracruz for almost extinguished tarpons.
Los Tuxtlas still has daily diminishing numbers of coastal mariners catching snappers, groupers, and that
famous "huachinango" (red snapper).
Whatever is fished on the coast, except for local consumption, is headed for Veracruz. Trying to get a fresh
piece of sea fish in Catemaco is almost an oxymoron, because probably it´s something that was shipped to
Veracruz, frozen to Catemaco, or with eyes reeking of death a long time ago.
Catemaco is blessed with upwards of 1000 fishermen. The last presidente donated hundreds of fiberglass
lanchas (boats) to that constituency to accomodate a campaign promise.
The laguna is highly productive, primarily because of its eutrophic conditions (excess nuitrients from
lakeside runoffs). Nevertheless someone, years ago, not in his right mind, decided to introduce an African
tilapia to Laguna Catemaco to improve the liveliness of Catemaco fishers.
Since then that ravenous fish has out competed most of Laguna Catemaco´s native species, and still,
because of overfishing, rarely produces anything larger than a shoe.
Anyone eating one of those famous mojarras of Catemaco is probably being served something that was
caught elsewhere or raised in someone´s ditch.
