The Gulf of Mexico fronting onto Mexico is typically broad, low-relief coastal plain, except in the areas of
near Palma Sola and Los Tuxtlas. The continental shelf is fairly narrow at the northern border and
becomes even more narrow near the Los Tuxtlas mountains where it is only 8 to 10 Km wide.
Southeastward it again widens until the mostly flat Yucatan shores. The northern part of the continental
shelf ranges up to 200 km in width; most of it is flat and shallow
