La Barra sits on the tip of a sandspit separating the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna de Sontecomapan.
Most of the coastal area consists of environmentally threatend sand dunes which have miraculously been
converted to cattle pastures.
The small village scratches out a living from fishing and catering to both local and national tourists but most
of the year its beaches and restaurants are desolate and reserve miles of pristine shore for
beachcombers. Numerous palapas dot the sand surrounding the gulf inlet beckoning visitors with a
plethora of fresh seafood.
A novel way to enjoy this "beach resort" is to take the water taxi from Sontecomapan to La Barra,
bypassing about 5 miles of considerably bumpy road which may become paved in 2008.
