Laguna Catemaco´s only outlet is the Rio Grande de Catemaco, also known as the Rio Grande de San
Andres, Rio Comoapan, or anything else except Rio Grande de Catemaco.
Technically the river is an extension of the major river filling Laguna Catemaco which would be Rio
Cuetzalapan.
Perhaps the neighboring inhabitants are still fuming over Volcano San Martin´s ante historical blockage of
the laguna´s drainage towards the Gulf of Mexico because almost none but geographers call the river Rio
Grande de Catemaco.
The river scurries from Catemaco to a major waterfall at Eyipantla.
Other minor waterfalls were dynamited to provide the river with dams and mechanical sluice gates to feed
an electric generating plant at Chilapan, just northwest of Catemaco.
From there the river is joined by several other rivers draining the San Andres Tuxtla and Santiago Tuxtla
areas and then the Rio Grande either merges with or is merged by the Hueyapan River which drains most
of the northern Sierra Santa Marta.
Then, the river joins the mighty San Juan River on its romp north to join Rio Papaloapan and its
degorgement into the Gulf of Mexico via the Laguna Alvarado.
