Aside from the beautiful Malecon, Catemaco´s streets are not necessarily
beautiful, but they are definitely interesting.

Most of the city center is paved, while most of the outlying areas still depend on
dirt roads. Catemaco gets about 13 feet of rain each year and these dirt roads
create some interesting logistic problems aside from flushing their dirt onto the
lower paved companions.
But little by little, streets are being modernized. Because of the heavy rains, most
all roads are built of concrete. The few streets that were asphalted are now back
in the stone age.
Concrete streets are expensive and depend on a miserly municipal budget.
Property owners are also assessed. But if property owners cannot afford to pay
their contribution, they stay living on a dirt road. Simple
