Catemaco City, Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico
Housing
Home ownership is extraordinarily high in Catemaco considering the economic
plight of most of its populace.
The shores of the Laguna are graced with numerous mansions and vacation
retreats, while the city´s housing ranges from hovels to very attractive modern
homes.
Lots are generally very small but it is surprising how many rooms can be packed
into what from the outside looks like a simple 2 story house.
A prominent feature of Catemaco is the high number of unfinished homes (obras
negras). Mortgage financing is just becoming known in Catemaco, so most
construction is still self financed and building is done on a money available basis,
one room or floor per month or per years.
Zoning is a nightmare. To insure a homeowner does not neighbor a pig farm or a
machine shop, it helps to buy the surrounding 4 square blocks. But that seems to
be typical even in Mexico City, unless living on high priced real estate or in gated
communities.
Catemaco still has a high number of architecturally interesting old wooden and
stucco homes. Unfortunately most are in disrepair and no effort is being made to
preserve that part of the historical heritage of Catemaco.
Condominiums are still a no-no in Catemaco, except for a dilapidated garden
complex in the outskirts.
Apartments buildings are also rare and US customary accommodations are hard
to find.
Photos of the really nice homes in Catemaco are diffucult to obtain. Most obstruct
the view with giant walls.
