Tourism: - catemaco.info - Selva del Marinero
Access: 21 km, (16 miles) from Catemaco to Coyame, then dirt road up and down hill.
We´ve traveled several times to the village but always seem to pick a rainy day and never had the fortune
to try out the trails. The last 8 km of road driving from near Coyame are fairly bad but the views are
magnificent. Once in the village, a guide will usually meet you and offer to lead you on the surrounding
jungle trails.
Our custom is to buy fresh langostinos (giant shrimp) which are caught in the surrounding rivers or
grown in the mojarra fish tanks, and have a local lady turn them into a meal. Absolutely yummy! Before
leaving we usually buy a case of fresh picked mandarin oranges and munch on them at home dreaming
of this idyllic jewel of Los Tuxtlas.
The populace is very pleasant and very poor. Any pesos left behind help them and their endeavor to
protect their remaining piece of paradise.
